Creating depth of field ???

I have created a general model for a city.
enough detail to make a good background to the main illustrated buildings.
but i want to render these images out of archicad, so that the rear buildings, further back fade out slowly.
how can i create depth of field when rendering ??ß

i tried also this fog option but that just looks like a grey filter over every thing. total crap.

any help would be super.

ArchiCAD does not support depth of field rendering.

It can export in Piranesi epx file format, which includes a grayscale depth map - which can in turn be used by Photoshop's depth filter to blur things based on distance. But, you would need a copy of Piranesi to be able to open the epx file and export the depth channel.

A 30 day trial version of Piranesi for Mac seems to be here:

Don't see an official Piranesi download site any longer, much less the Windows version. Must be out there somewhere...

It can export to Artlantis, which does support depth of field blurring. Ditto other more advanced renderers.

Most render engines with physical camera would do the trick. Advanced Render and Vray for Cinema 4D are good with this.

IMO using depth of field will make aerial renderings like your model is a scaled model. Please see these images as a reference:

If you want to create a quick fake depth of field, here is what you can do:

In Photoshop

• Duplicate layer to have the original rendering in case you need to restore anything
• Select all
• Select menu/Modify/Border. Around 30px to 80px
• Invert selection
• Select menu/feather. Between 80 and 400 appx. Depending on the rendering size
• filter menu/blur/lens blur. Play with it until you get desired results.
