We have sent off to support and not received any answer so are asking the infinite wisdom of the collective forum if anyone knows how to eliminate this very distracting edges.
Thanks in advance for any insights

Answered in this thread by Marton Kiss. It seems you have to use the Physical Render setting.

OK the Built in Physical render medium gives us results that are even worse. This is the out of the box settings that should just work, correct?

You might want to increase your Diffuse depth settings to maximum ( under Global Illumination), and also increase the general Ray depth and Ray threshold settings (under General Options.)
This may or may not completely eliminate the problem ( I've found that they are they key or the key culprits if you may - along with Reflection depth - when dealing with errors to do with reflection, refraction and transparency in Cinerender), since Bitmap and billboard trees and objects seem to be a big overall problem that have yet to be hashed out on the Maxon end rather than on the GS end.
You have to bear in mind the fact that the version of the Cinerender engine we're using in ArchiCAD is actually one version behind the actual current version of Cinerender engine that currently runs in the current or latest version of Cinema4D.
Which means Maxon may have already resolved the issue, but we may not get a fix until GS update the engine to the current or at least get a hotfix or update to that specific module.

Thanks for the info, we have been playing with all the settings you mentioned. We have discovered may have to do with us setting a transparency for these billboardmobjects.
We also use Vectorworks with Renderworks which is built on Cinerender engine and do not see this issue. It could be that they rewrote some base code that fixed this issue.
