I remember there is a topic about this here, but anyway just download the .lwa's from lightworks-user site (not all materials listed there works with ArchiCAD). Copy the files (.lwa's) to :
..\graphisoft\ArchiCAD 9\Add-Ons\Visualisation\smdata\archives
In this way you do not need to specify location as they are in default location of ArchiCAD

How do you know that you're not replacing existing materials with new materials?
Can you create a separate folder for all the added lwa files that you download?

Normally if you are replacing anything, you will be prompted and you may not choose to replace that particular file. But if you think you want additional files to be located elsewhere then just follow the link given by Archiben may be there is a way to do it that way.
