Finally added the general light to my exterior renderings for the first time...(I've gotten through 30% of your book Dwight....every paragraph is gold...the jokes keep me focused, thanks!)...time is scarse for us cad monkeys. Any suggestions on placement of the general light in this particular view? Any comments or suggestions about colors, ideas, tricks, material representations...etc... that would compliment/improve this render and/or future renderings are all welcomed....

Thanks for the time fellow cadmates.

Excellent work! This is the epitome of a technique I call "PhotoDream." [Compared, say, to most LightWorks renderings done in a technique i call "PhotoNightmare"]

You have even managed to convincingly manage some things I absolutely hate in a rendering without me turing you in to "HomeLand Taste." Normally, I hate edgefade of any kind, but you have made this image so luminous and soft it begs for the gossamer treatment as much as Doris
Day did during her close-ups in "With Six You Get Eggroll."

Great Sketch settings - you've done the overlay with just the right opacity since it isn't until close examination until one perceives the scribbles.

Who needs time consuming soft shadows when they can be illuminated like that?
And the wall color - is that actually a graduated material on there or a lighting effect?

And you got out the black!!! Was this a direct extraction as in the book or did you use pastel colors?

I have only three direct criticisms:
1: The foliage? World Trade Forum??? Is this the Archicad artificial K-Mart Xmas tree object or what? Too close - attacks the dreamy serenity of the scene with harmful intent. Think "Return of the Dawn of the Conifer People."
2: the lawn texture repeats. The only texture in the scene - make lawn just a noisy color instead.
3: Need to see a titch more of the front door to be sure of the building organization.

Thanks so much Dwight. Yeah! haha, I finally got rid of the black. That had to be extracted from the book, my renderings before use to have black everywhere, a result of using the light from the subterranean world improperly. Oh man, yeah the trees and grass boggles me all the time. They are things I've managed to ignore (grin on my face). But hopefully by christmas, I'll treat myself to a special tree generator...

Hey, how'd that happen?! I usually do show more of the front door on my exterior renderings! good eyes Dwight!

I gotta do some grass research as soon as I get the chance. I know its been discussed here before.

Before I forget, the wall color is actually a tweaked version of your stucco #1 from the lightworks bible. And from what could tell, the general light made a huge difference on the way the walls reacted. This render was fun to work on. And I think the client had a better response to the photo dream technique.

Thanks again for the suggestions! very helpful.

Great.
More about the textures:
Since your scene only has the one - that grass carpet tile - it is better just to make a simple texture - a solid color - in photoshop and add "Noise" as a filter. For preliminary work a user might have a whole palette of these "roughs" of varying degree to stand in for preliminary real materials not yet specified. I have attached an example of what i think the grass should look like in your shot.

Junior,
Where did you get the raked gable end roof tile caps? Is this a standard Archicad part? All I have seen is the ridge caps. Is this the ridge cap? Which I know can be sloped but I haven't been able to roll them on their side.

Please let me know
thanks,

Hi Jim,

Its actually the same ridge tile from the archicad library. If you open the object under file/gdl objects/open object .....open the 3d script and change 180 to 270 on the revolve command line. Save as 'gable' tile.........and presto!

Thanks Dwight for the photoshop grass tip

I actually had this file for a while now, and thought it would be interesting to follow up with the changes made. I made small tweaks in the illustration with regards to the suggestions made from previous comments. The 'christmas trees' survived

I'll save further improvements for current projects
