Is there a way, with the built in lightworks renderer, to create a light in a room without windows. All the lamps seem to simulate exterior light only!

Yes you can.

Any of the lamps, either the physically modelled lamps or the general lights both found under 'Visualization' 'Light Sources' in the AC library, will work whether a room has windows or not.

You can also increase the ambient light in your rendering
