Text Tool Capitalization Options (All Caps, Small Caps, etc.)

Pedro Melo
Advocate

It would be very helpful to have capitalization control options in the Text Tool, allowing users to easily toggle between:

  • All Caps

  • Small Caps

  • Sentence case

  • Lowercase

Proposed Implementation:

  • Add a dropdown in the Text Settings dialog (or Info Box) to choose capitalization style.

  • Works similarly to how text formatting is handled in most modern word processors and design software.

  • Does not alter the original text input — just controls how it's displayed.

Why This Is Useful:

  • Improves Typography Control: Designers often need different text styles depending on drawing types (e.g. titles in ALL CAPS, notes in Sentence Case).

  • Saves Time: No need to retype or manually convert text for formatting consistency.

  • Increases Flexibility: Makes the Text Tool more robust without needing multiple versions of the same note.

Example Use Case:

  • A user types: Suspended ceiling with acoustic panels

  • Then sets it to display as:

    • ALL CAPS → SUSPENDED CEILING WITH ACOUSTIC PANELS

    • Small Caps → Suspended Ceiling With Acoustic Panels (styled with small caps)

    • Sentence Case → Suspended ceiling with acoustic panels

This would be a small but high-impact enhancement for documentation clarity and drawing standards — and a very familiar UX upgrade for most users.

It would be nice to have this built into Archicad.

It is possible now with add-ons, but I don't like to rely on add-ons from 3rd parties.

It would also save a lot of time if you could edit multiple text objects, like for instance in indesign, without having to open each one separately.

+1

Not only text tool, but keynote legend, labels etc.

Until then I asked a friend of mine to create an all caps Arial Narrow font.

Absolutely, @zoli79  — totally agree with you!

When I mentioned the “Text Tool,” I actually meant all tools where text is applicable in Archicad — labels, keynotes, dimensions. It would be great to have capitalization formatting available consistently across all of them.

@zoli79
How is that font working out? Does it contain all the odd symbols? Would you or your friend mind sharing that?

@hmartell It works perfect. There are a few unique Latin characters that aren't transformed (e.g. ā ă ả), but these aren't in my language, so not a problem for me.

Shoot me your email address in a private message and I can send it over.

Central Innovations have already developed a tool for this. Just make it part of main Archicad.

Agree with being able to set font styles.

Also, text needs to be able to be set out from its baseline.
Changing fonts, for example from a custom font in an archicad drawing to Arial in an exported DWG, makes the text jump around.

Equally when producing design reports in archicad, changing fonts and even just font sizes, makes the text jump around as well.

Being able to have unity between font sizes between reports produced in Archicad and ones produced in InDesign or other point-based font size programs would also be great. Or at least have a correct conversion option from point to mm sized font, which shouldn't take 30 versions of Archicad to correct.

A fine addition to autotexts in particular ( and text box in general) would be to be able to use uppercase letters. This would be useful in documentation, now the only possible solution is a manual text box.

What autotext in particular?

If the source such as the 'drawing name' is in upper case then the autotext will be upper case as well.
