Do you mean in 'Settings' > 'Render Mode' that Global Illumination is greyed out?
This is normal if you have not 'Initialized' the Global Illumination.
You can do this from the 'Global illumination' section where you will see the 'Initialize' button.

If you can't Initialize GI then I am not sure why not.

Sorry can't do a screen grab of BIMx.

You don't.
You just save it and the file type will be .BIMX
These can be opened on PC, MAC or mobile devices.
On PC & MAC you will need the BIMx viewer (if you don't have Archicad with BIMx installed).
On mobile devices you will need to install the BIMx app.

So just to confirm you don't see this in the menu (see screen shot below taken from the manual).
Is it greyed out or just not there?

Maybe the Educational version is different to the full version but it is showing that the render mode is already set to Global Illumination.

This is different to what I see in the commercial version.
Can any one with EDU version confirm there is no GI options and render mode is already set to GI?

There is no .EXE file version for BIMx.
There used to be and this was a self contained file that had the viewer built in so you could open it on any machine without having to install anything.
This has gone now and you can only save the file (as .BIMX).
If you want to open the file on another machine without BIMx then they will have to down load the BIMx viewer from the Graphisoft website ...
