VBE - Run in Window?

Anonymous

Hello, I've run into an issue where I need to record my screen, and for a portion of that time, I'm using VBE (and specifically the 3D red/blue feature).

But because it runs in a full screen overshell over the screen, screen capturing utilities won't pick it up.

Is there any way at all that to make VBE run in a window rather than in full screen?

There isn't a screen capture program you can launch first? I use Mac for all this sort of stuff so I'm not sure about Windows. There is a simple solution on the Mac side which is to run VBe in a Windows virtual machine. Perhaps you could do this in Windows as well. I'm pretty sure VMware has all sorts of virtualization stuff to run in Windows.

Pressing F5 while in VBE saves a screen capture (other than menus) ... is that good enough, or do you need the menus? Red/cyan images capture just fine.

Otherwise, there is no direct method, as VBE capture all input. (Running a background screen capture in timer-capture mode is unrealistic, as you cannot anticipate the time to launch and navigate in VBE.)

Cheers,

I am currently using VBE for ArchiCAD 14, and have found a way to record the walk throughs. I use the free version if Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 found here.

First start the Screen Capture portion of Expression. Launch VBE, open the menu, launch the prerecorded walkthrough sequence, and hit esc to return to full screen. Now, If using a pc, hit ctrl+shift+esc (not sure what the mac equivalent would be). This opens your task manager and pops up your task bar. It also reopens the menu in VBE since you technically hit esc. You can now go to the task bar, select Expression Screen Capture which is already running, and hit record. It will then ask you to define a window to record on the screen. If you came straight out of VBE and to Expression, you can see VBE in the background, and you can set the record window size for Expression by resizing the red box on your screen. I find the best results are when you keep the menu open on VBE, and record only a portion of the screen (instead of full screen)(If you want to record full screen, then you need to make sure that the menu on VBE is open before you hit ctr+shift+esc). I find the recorded video is choppy if you are trying to record a window that is too large. You can also change the video quality settings within Expression Screen Capture to help with this. Finally, once you set your record window size, wait for your walkthrough sequence (which should already be playing) to get close to the end, and before it cycles through to the beginning again, hit record. You will see a count down, and it will start to record the screen. IMPORTANT: do not click back into VBE; this will cause VBE to reinitialize, and Expression will not be able to record it. Just let it sit recording your preset walkthrough because it is technically still in the background. This is why it is important to create a preset walkthrough. You will find that you wont be able to record a live walkthrough.

Hope that helps!

Screenflow for Mac can also screencapture your walkthrough.

Is there any logical reason that VBE has to take over the screen? Trying to organise the workflow for screen capture is troublesome to say the least. It would be great if the screen could be reduced to a standard format size so we could easily capture the walkthrough etc.
Anything happening with R15 release...ie an upgrade of VBE??
