DWG file with multiple blocks opens as 1 library part

Hello,

my company send me a DWG file containing all the blocks they use in autocad. This file contains around 50 blocks.

I open the DWG file with this method : File > Libraries and Objects > Open Object.

What happens is that Archicad creates one big library part of all the 50 blocks in stead of 50 individual parts. Is there a way/method in which 50 individual library parts are created?

Yes. Open Object does exactly what you saw - no matter what file format you open, it creates a single object for what is read.

To convert blocks to individual objects, you need to open (or merge) the dwg file. I highly recommend that you do not merge it into your current project if the intent is only to obtain the 50 blocks that you mention.

Instead, open the dwg as a new project (which you will later discard), but customizing the import translator setting as shown in the attached screenshot.

After the import, every block will be converted to a AC object in the embedded library.

Take a look at Library Manager, and you'll see all of the objects that were created for the blocks in the original DWG file.

I recommend that you get rid of any objects that are clearly not useful. There are bound to some. Just open the Object Tool and look through the Embedded Library and make a note of the useless ones as you view the 2D (and possibly 3D) views.

Finally, see the attached screenshot for how to export the objects that you've decided to keep. You can then either load that external folder in another project(s) - or you can import it into another project into that project's embedded library.

Hello Karl,

thank you very much. It works, but i noticed that a lot of detail is lost during this process.

For example: autocad -> archicad
- a tube construction is converted to simple lines.
- almost every block is converted to a wireframe model
- lots of details are simply missing.
