OK here is the scenario. I have published to pdf a set of drawings, my client can open all of them except the exterior elevations. I have them with some notes and shadows, they aren't terribly huge. (first time using shadows on cd's Thanks to multithreading, yea!!! Anyway my client has vista somethingorother hp intel core duo, a gig or two in ram, but he starts to open them and they hang up at 29% and then crash. In the preview of the icon, it shows both elevations and appears complete. But he cant get them to open. I have tried opening them up in preview, and resaved them and he still can't open them. Any thoughts?

Try changing the shadow fill settings. AFAIK sometimes shadows in pdfs are converted into lines by the reader with the result of having to process a couple of million of lines and hanging up. Other suggestions is to check for updates to the pdf reader and or change the app (cutepdf or nicepdf come to mind) since Preview is able to handle the file.

I will give it a try, the shadows are set to 25%, I fear that the 12% won't show and therefore what is the point? My client has the latest version of acrobat, as per bundled in his vista, and updates. What I can't understand is why a 3 mg and a 2.8 mg file would crash on the latest offering from hp? Another reason, I am thankful I was able to switch to apple!!!!

As an experiment switch the shadows to solid and retest the file. A 25% fill as vectors at 600dpi might mean 150 points that have to be drawn per inch of drawing and acrobat might get "tired" of counting…
