Snow Leopard

Just received notification that Snow Leopard is out on Friday.

This will be my first mac OS upgrade and I am wondering what is involved? Do I order it, or wait a month or more? Any tips?

Will I have to upgrade other software?
Go ahead, laugh at the newbie to mac

Will GS Technical Team offer a comment on how OpenCL and Grand Central - two key pieces of under-the-hood technology in Snow Leopard - will effect speed in the current version of ArchiCAD and what the impact of its implementation in future versions of ArchiCAD will be. In theory, this should be HUGE!
Until they respond... my speculation is that I do not believe there will be any change for the current version (12) as programs have to be written specifically to take advantage of OpenCL and Grand Central. As the amount of work involved is large, I doubt if a hotfix for 12 would add these features...nor do I imagine that GS switching their threading model to GC would make much difference. Only making new areas of the program multithreaded would really help ... and that, again, is real work - perhaps for a future version.

Cheers,

Hi Karl,

Thanks for the reality check. I guess I'd entered the Reality Distortion Field early and came away thinking that Grand Central, for one, was intended to make the process less daunting for software developers.

The screed (grail?) was that Grand Central would do much of the heavy lifiting for parceling out computing tasks.

If you had seen my programming attempts back at McGill (i became persona non grata in the lab), you'd know that I'm no specialist in this department. I prefer the view from 45,000ft!

Note aux utilisateurs Mac
Pour le moment les logiciels ArchiCAD et HyperArchi ne fonctionnent pas sur Snow Leopard. Attention à ne pas mettre à jour votre système trop rapidement. Nous vous tiendrons informé de la disponibilité d'une version compatible.

Oops. Sorry! No doubt the page is going public soon. I can never tell which pages I am viewing that are 'under construction' vs public. 😞

But, at least the good news is that a fix is coming... Hopefully I am not in trouble for relaying that...
