I was looking at this a bit closer.
I think you can make the 2D flexible if you script it to use the stair/tread parameters.
Don't ask me where you get these from, I haven't gotten that far yet and I probably won't bother trying.
They don't seem super obvious, but they must be there somewhere.
Anyway there will still be a couple of problems.
The 3D tread will not be stretchy either - you would have to script that as well.
And the 2D view will still show a default rectangular tread, no matter if you add a script or 2D symbol.
The default 2D & 3D treads can be altered to any shape without saving as a custom tread.
The only problem is they can only be edited one by one in plan or 3D.
And once changed they no longer stretch with the width of the stair.
It would be great if we could select all treads and have them all edited at once (unless I am missing this function).
