The "show text area" is greyed out and can not be activated. Either, in the fill selection settings pop-up dialogue box, or in the Show Area Text in the upper margin.
Operating system used: Mac Apple Silicon 11.6 Big Sur

Somehow the tracker—accessible under the Options Work environment—had been disabled. Once it was reactivated the issue was solved. Thanks

Your post indicated AC 23 on 11.6 Big Sur. Is that correct? If not, please share the version and build of AC and the build of MacOS you're using, as this is not a known problem with supported versions on supported operating systems. (You might also do a new-from-template and test if the show area text is working in a new project, indicating an issue with your file ... or the view in which you're using the fill tool.)

Karl,
Yes AC 23 on 11.6 Big Sur is correct. I took your advice and launched a new instance AC23 project with the default settings. The fill tool works as it is supposed to, allowing one to select the "show the text area." Two other things that have also stopped working properly, the arc/circle toll "input field" and the ability to edit existing text also work in this new project. Could there be something that I inadvertently disabled which is causing these issues?
