Mystery symbols in label tool text string

I have been using the label tool within the Detail Window. Now from time to time I will get a label that I have copied or selected label tool and I will get a bunch of symbols within the text string appear out of nowhere. Refer to attached picture.
This is most annoying, especially if you don't spot then all, then issue a set to the client and he/she asks what is this?
I'm using Windows XP PRO and AC8 AUS R3+ (awaiting for the release of 8.1 Australian version)

I've had this problem too. My work alt/option click a label I want to copy and then placing a new one rather than dragging a copy.
