Is it possible to reinstall the program over the existing copy and not break the connection to the project file that has been created?

What attributes do you have missing?
It could just be that a library folder has not been loaded.
Open the Library manager when you open you file and see if there are any libraries that are not linked.
If so then it should just be a matter of 'Adding' those folders and all should be good.
I know Archicad trial files can only be opened on the machine that they were created on.
You said you re-installed to a new folder - this might be enough to make Archicad think it is a different machine/installation.
If you are still having problems can you post a screen shot of you Library loading Report (the error message) and of the Library Manager when you open that dialogue box.
If Archicad is running and you can open files or start new ones I would say you don't need to re-install.
Barry.

We found that there was a reinstall / repair option with the trial installer so after several attempts we were able to get everything working again, lost a few days but I think we are back on track.
