Template problems

Attended the latest webinar on "templates" and download a template file. Something happened to my existing templete files. The toolbars and palettes reflect the new templete. Is this possible??. Also the new templete does not give options when say you press "Wall" in toolbox to do a rectangular layout, continuous wall etc. I don't know what happened.

I tried to open an recent project but the palette was the same. I was able to correct the issue with the window>palette>show main palettes only and it did come back. I had to only change one template file and the others template files in my archicad template folder updated as well. Are the palettes interconnected?
