I think the Xeon is positioned as a server processor, which in terms of processor infrastructure means that it has more cache (fast temporary storage in the processor). That makes it faster because the fast processor does not have to wait as much for "slower" system components, like data coming from the memory, and such things.
So the Xeon should perforn better, but it is more expensive, I think. I wonder if the extra money is worth the additional cost.
