3d Grid

Does anyone know if there is parametric 3d grid object out there - ala Neil Denari?

What kind of grid are you looking for?

it's not parametric, but a little trick i use to see the grid in my 3D window:

save your building's 2D grid (just the grid - nothing else) as a DWG file and then open that same DWG file as an object (File>GDL Objects>Open Object... and navigate to that DWG file).

save the object into your library and then place on each story of your plan.

you need to fiddle a wee bit with the 2D representation of the object so that you can place a couple of hotspots by which to accurately place your gird object . . . but that's it: it shows in the 3D window.

and normally the grid doesn't move much once design development is well under way, so updating is never too big a deal. it would be nice to have a 3D grid to snap to though. or was that what you were after originally? my object grid is really just a visual aid . . .

for suspended acoustic ceiling grid? we've been using a slab with a hatch pattern on it. turn on the 3d vectorial hatching in the image settings and it pops right up. easy to modify, too. not fully detailed though if you're after photo-rendering quality models

Just a little trick,

you can also easily create a 3D grid by drawing it using simple lines then select them and use the IFC create grid function.
In this way you will get a parametric object coming from the standard built-in IFC library...

And if that is too scary, here's an object I use for 3D lines. They will only appear in the OpenGL window since they have no surface to render.

Here's the object - a single line segment with 3D hotspots.

This is very simple and based on really old code, but still works.

Please, anyone: update and circulate if you think it can use a trick or two.

Here's a grid ref object which I have tweaked to show a 3d line vertically the same height as the storey height of the storey it is inserted into.

It was frustrating when cutting sections through the model not being able to see the grid so I came up with this object.

It's quite an old object so I'm not sure of it's original origins but it works for me
