Can a window object determine the area of a zone that it has been placed into?
I know it can determine the zone name, number, category and code from REQUEST("Zone_relations",...)
But can it tell what the area of that zone is directly from the zone.
I know it can be done by having the zones save their info to an external text file and then have the windows read that info in but I want to avoid the text files if possible.
Does anyone have any ideas?

No as far as I know there is no way to get area directly from the zone.
The zone stamp has to save out to a text file and then any other object can read from the text file.
But I never got around to doing it.

I tried to get room dimensions using objects who are attached to zones, via Interior Wizard add on and I was able to obtain the over all width and depth for a rectangular and square room. As you said for a custom room geometry you need the right code for that and I am still working on that.
