You can use File/Libraries and Objects/Open Objects. Then select dwg-format and choose the file. The Object editing window appears and you save it from the top menu (or close the window and AC will ask if you want to save it)
Then select the object-tool and place the object.
During editing you can click the 2D symbol button. Then you can edit the representation using 2D tools.

When opening a .DWG file in ArchiCAD that has embedded blocks, you should get a dialog box that allows you to save AutoCAD blocks as GDL objects. You can also set this as a default in a custom DWG Translator setting.
