GDL string size limit

I'm trying to read a text file, and it seems as though I am limited to 255 characters. Lovely. I even looked it up in the manual, and confirmed this.

Is there a way around this? (UGH!!! Feels like I'm back using 8.3 filenames!!)

I only opened this thread because I misread it as a 'G-string' limit.....
