Libraries and Doors etc

After 10 years with ArchiCAD and now on AC 13 I am at a total loss.
1. What are embedded libraries and why vs linked libraries and why ? (there is no explanation anyplace that I can find)
2. How does one delete embedded libraries (if they are for AC 8 etc.) ? (the Library Manager says that there is too much to import ..?)
3. Why do new doors now not remove the wall in plan when installed, but do in elevation.... ?

Thanks, Paul

My understanding is that you should keep standard libraries (eg. default archicad library, office standard library) as linked.
Project specific parts that you make, or find on the net and will only use on that project, you embed.

Why?- I am not so clear! I hope it makes updating AC13-14-15 easier?* I think it is also to do with Teamwork2 projects - but on reflection there is no obvious reason as GS make a 'client' download the BIM Server library anyhow.

2. How does one delete embedded libraries (if they are for AC 8 etc.) ? (the Library Manager says that there is too much to import ..?)

In library manager you can add and delete libraries. I do not believe you should embed whole libraries. (i.e. at most it should be only parts you have actually used).

3. Why do new doors now not remove the wall in plan when installed, but do in elevation.... ?

I'm not sure your question but there are two possibilities I can see:
Model view options - you can turn off door display for ceiling plans
or
Due to multistory walls, and door settings (display real cut) you can have doors appear realistically in plan - ie. if above the plan cut level you cannot see them (actually I have had 'lost' doors that only appear in 3d as a result of this). Just need to watch your settings...

Hope that helps

*-What I would like explained is if a library part is embedded that contains a call out to a (say) AC13 library part from GS - eg. Bath 13, then when the file is updated to AC14 does the part corrupt when the _13 object is replaced with a _14 object?

Actually I think library parts are one of GS's many dysfunctional components:
-upgrading parts between versions is a disaster. Poor form given yearly upgrade cycle.
-parameters change between versions so one cannot easily transfer old properties into the new version. New features should get new parameters.
-TW2 - logic of centralised libraries is fine but not very practical when accessing a BIM server over the internet for the first time. User should be able to take a copy of file and library home on memory stick. Upon opening the file @ home these should be synced over the internet and only the differences transmitted - rather than the whole lot!

Hi Paul,

Some more info on your first two questions.

Embedded libraries are new in AC13 and, quoting from the wiki:

The Embedded Library is designed to store custom, project-specific objects in the project itself (rather than in your file system) to ensure that they are always available and editable. The Embedded libraries may contain:

* Object files you create and save yourself (e.g. Patch, Stair, Trusses, Custom Object, Custom Door/Window components)
* any object file that you browse for and add to this library, including Web Objects downloaded through GDL Web Control
* Image files loaded for use as Material textures or other purposes.

Linked libraries are the same as you've been using all these years.

Do you mean that you opened a project from v.8 in 13 and the objects got embedded? As per the same wiki article above, "Other" objects from your old file automatically become embedded in 13. Is this what is happening? Also, migrating a project from 8 to 13 is a huge jump! It might be a good idea to complete such a project in 8 itself.

The new library manager looks very different from before and not everybody likes it - especially the lack of the "history" tab but after some time you get used to it.

Hope this helps.
