I'm looking for a way to make an object that is just text, but has the ability to be linked (and display) to any drawing placed on a layout (if the linking function can be done via drop down from the info box, that would be nice).

Hello,
sorry but i can't understand what is your goal, are you searching for a label of the views inserted in the layout or do you want to select from the text object what view to insert in the layout?

andy. i struggled with the same thing a while ago. try this
right click on view you want to link to, click 'Set as Autotext Reference'. Then put text on your layout, click Insert Autotext button, an option 'Reference for "layout view"' will come up. Then you get a few options of what to display.
pic attached. hope that helps
