I am wondering what is special about many of the localised versions. I can understand special library parts and solar locations. In other words why does New Zealand and Australia need separate versions to an international version

Tim, this is the error I mentioned to you the other day.

What I did to get around this is to uninstall every copy of Archicad that I have, namely 7.0, 8.0 and 8.1

After uninstalling, I still needed to delete my Archicad folders.

I then reinstalled 7.0(only for Architerra) and then reinstalled 8.1.

After that I upgraded to 2256.

So far all seems to be working properly. I tried uninstalling and deleting 8.1 only, but that did nothing to help. I had to get rid of all copies of Archicad on the system first.

grant,
i just wanted to post the error message to see if others have seen it.
i have done the total uninstall (3or4 times), any instance of anything ac related. even any gdl viewers...
just getting ready to update this really really clean deinstall/reinstall.
if that fails again, its back to 1410 for me. i may loose work done w/ 2254, but at this point, 3 days later, what the heck.
i will post my latest results soon.

Try following the instructions to clean out your old preferences and cache. At

http://tr.graphisoftus.com/

go to article #699 in the knowledge base. There yo will find instructions for both platforms. I have found this very helpful to have a successful clean install. New installations do not wipe these old files and AC is easily confused these days.

at this point i have really had it. i really do not want to reload my os.
may be time for a tumbler full of tequila (don julio of course), but i guess that is a topic for the archipub!

i just revieved the trgs 699 doc. there are a few things i may not have cleared but am concerned about a few of the last mentioned cache clearings.
"b.) Clear the local Cache:
C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Temp
c.) Clear the Windows cache:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp"
i am not sure i am comfortable clearing out these 2 system caches, there is quite a bit of stuff in there.
i thought the gs cleaner utility cleared most everything. gskb #660
any xp pros out there?

aahatimo,
When clearing anything out, per Jeffry, I 1st moved them to a folder on my desktop. I had some folders in the cache that I ended up restoring as they somehow slowed down logging off. When I was convinced things were OK then I moved them to the trash. I still had them in a folder and didn't delete them for a bit. This was a month or so ago when he told me 8.1 was not installed correctly on my machine hence errors.
With 8.2 he gave me a great tip about using the sytem restore of XP. I posted this somewhere else but I can't remeber so I will be repetative. Before installing an upgrade go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, sytem restore. It walks you through setting a restore point. Name it for example pre r2. Then if you have problems with r2 you can restore back to that point. The beauty is that all your custom settings of 8.1 are there. Much better than uninstalling and reinstalling.
Hope this helps.

Any file that gives an error message when you try to delete it (and does not delete) means they are in use by an active application. Otherwise these Temp folder(s) can be cleared since these remnant files just take up space. If you feel they are crucial, back them up on CD-R's. I have not known them to be vital to any application (I have been clearing the cache on my windows systems for months now.

day 4 update:
uninstalled per gskb699, reinstalled 8.1 updated to 2256, opened ac8.1r2 did a new & reset, did simple plan saved. opened pm3.1r2 same new & reset, tried to import test plan, bg archicad failed. does anyone know when bg archicad last showed up in the 8.1 folder? v8.0? any ideas why it only shows up now in mac directories?
one thing that has been somewhat consistent w/ all these attempts is a locked file message below. it did not appear this time during uninstall, only when 2256 updater ran. the locked file is: C:\ArchiCAD 8.1\Graphisoft Shell Extension\GSShellX.DLL. the file # in my current dir is 3.0.0.1508
i have been running bug reports after every reinstalled bg ac failure and sent them to david w/ gs us, he is forwarding them to r&d.
so i am back to 1410 build after repeating previous steps, again.. i better change my signature.
