Only if you are using the guide lines or you are snapping to the grid.
Or using the tracker or co-ordinates palette by typing in an angle and distance.

Manuel:

In addition to Barry's methods: option-x, option-y, option-r and option-a will constrain to those axis (x, y, r, a).

Hi Barry, regarding the guide line method, if I click and drag in the direction I want to go I do get a line with a half circle showing up sometimes showing that the object being moved is in a straight line. You are not talking about this when you say guide line method are you? I have to have the guide lines turned on and then drag in the direction I want to go and wait for a guide line to show up and follow that, is that right? I have not tested that method yet so what do you recommend?

So long as your guide lines are active then as you start to drag you will get a guide line passing through the point you started to drag from and in the direction you want to go.
