After I continued to work in the .pln for an hour I was able to save. What happened & what can I do if this ever happens again & I can't save?

Try Save As to a different location.

I haven't had the issue for a long time, but I seem to remember,...
if I closed all of my open windows (except for the floor plan) I was then able to save.
Also, as AC17's autosave is pretty robust (I have autosave set to "Ultra Safe" i.e., save each step), I've had good luck force quitting AC and restarting/opening the autosaved PLN.
Works quicker than you can say your name

I went to lunch. Came back, still couldn't save. Began to work in the .pln & it crashed. Opened it up & didn't lose anything.

I had the same issue at the office, this seemed to happen when out electricity was cut and our server turned off... I have an ups at least... the only solution I could find was to "save as" to my desktop... and the copy it back when the server was available.
Hope it helps...
