I find it much more comfortable to move myself around in the 3d view as opposed to moving the model around.
Something like a WASD-mode?

So long as you are in Perspective mode you can activate the "Explore Model' mode where you can use WASD to navigate.
However you can not edit in this mode so need to exit to edit.
Using a mouse with a scroll wheel achieves exactly the same navigation.
Scroll to move forward toward the cursor.
Press the wheel to pan,
SHIFT+wheel press to rotate.
Then you can edit while you move.
There is no need to activate/deactivate the 'Orbit' mode if this is what you have been doing to move in 3D.
