General use of LOD among architects in the US?

Hi,

How does american architects follow/use the Level Of Detail concept in reality?
We're participating in an R&D-project concerning BIM-information classification and it would be beneficial not to invent the wheel all over so we're looking at LOD. Does LOD make sense in areal world environment? Anyone using it and can share experiences? Do you as arch get LOD-demands on your BIM-modelling (...we want a 3D model of the new hotel in LOD 200 next thursday...and LOD 300 in seven weeks)? Is it common or just a seleceted few large firms or nothing?

We're starting with a purpose for a delivery, say early energy evaluation. From that purpose we derive what information the BIM-model have to contain and from there we can write a kind of delivery manual. Some kind of classification is needed so that all disciplines have a fair chance to understand each other. I gather real world BIM can't follow an very specific information delivery manual to every account but as a general framework the it should be very useful.

Cheers,
Mats
