Importing my customized profile

I just did the hot fix for AC14 library. I had a lot of custom objects in the AC14 library, so I saved them to a flash drive, and then reloaded AC14 as was instructed in the download instructions. When I did this, it reset my profile to standard. I have saved my profiles as .XML files (default). I can add them to my library, but when I try to import them int work environment, they are "grayed out", and I can't open them. Any help would be appreciated.

Your Work Environment XML files do not belong in any library. They are imported directly from the file system. Keep them in a folder in your company data area. They should have been put there by Exporting them from the Work Environment dialog.

If you Export the Work Environment, rather than a specific scheme, then all schemes that make up that WE are exported. You only have to browse to that folder in the future to re-import your WE.

It sounds like you may not have set up your WE properly and exported it, but rather found the last-used xml files on your disk. You'll have to go to each of the 5 Scheme groups in the WE dialog and import each scheme one at a time I suspect ... then when things are set up properly, create a new WE with your name that references all your named schemes (NEVER "custom") and export that for safekeeping.

NO custom objects belong in the AC 14 library. It should always be kept as delivered. All custom objects belong in your own library folders completely outside of the ArchiCAD program folder (or the Windows program or Mac App folder structure for that matter).

First off, thank you for your response.

I have exported each of the five schemes separately, and have tried importing each one individually and these are the files that are grayed out. You mention that it seems as if I have not set up my work environment properly, and since I have had zero training on this program in the four years I have been using it, you are probably correct. Can you suggest a good tutorial on AC libraries? Archicad Help is ambiguous to say the least concerning this matter.

I will try and export my old work environment from an AC13 project, tomorrow and see if that works. I'll let you know.

As for the custom objects folder, luckily I have saved it on my flash drive. I will make sure to create a folder on my hard drive for them tomorrow as well.

Karl, thank you for the advice. I went in to the last project I had drawn using AC13 and clicked on the W.E., hit new profile,and exported it. This worked just fine.

Be aware, Jeff, than any new commands introduced in AC14 will not be automatically added to the imported profile. You will have to add these yourself to both the toolbars and the menus. They are all highlighted in blue in the toolbar and menu Work Environment settings.

Still no better way of importing old settings? I want to import just one custom toolbar from AC14 to AC15, not the whole toolbar & menu structure.

Is there a workaround of a workaround?

I wish that there were. I'm in the same situation, recreating custom toolbars from screenshots because I don't want to lose the new AC 15 toolbars and menus by importing my old WE scheme.

Each upgrade is a pain... and I still haven't gotten my 15 WE to match my 14 and earlier one yet...

Personally, I've come to the conclusion that it takes me about the same length of time to modify an imported profile from an older version as it does to create a completely new profile based on the default new version.

My profile has a very modified toolbar scheme, and a slightly modified menu scheme, so ideally I'd want to use the default new menu scheme and import in the old toolbar scheme, then modify both to suit. Adding a few extra buttons to your custom toolbars doesn't take too long to update between each version, but going through the menus and sub-menus to work out what has been changed takes by far the longest! (It took a very tedious 2.5 hours this year for AC14 to AC15 for the whole profile, but I wasn't exactly rushing!)

I think it would be much easier if they separated the Toolbar and the Menu schemes allowing you to import/export each individually.

Absolutely!

It should be available to export just one toolbar, not the whole set. If you created a very special, fantastic, brilliant toolbar which you want to share with somebody, you have to s*ew up his whole WE...
