MEP Pipe Accessory Tool

After drawing a pipe in 3D I am trying to add a valve using the MEP accessory tool. When the tool is active I click the pipe to place it, but it isn't oriented vertically. I can't rotate the valves in the tool settings. What am I doing wrong?
