Material Direction

Hi chaps...

I am sure this is a simple one, but could someone please tell me how to change the direction of a material to view correctly in 3d? See attached screen grab.

In the 3D window use the Align 3D Texture option

Very helpful, have used the 3d Align tool today due to your explanation.
