It sounds as though you are trying to use the model view as a "drawing board". You can't do this because it doesn't make sense to veiw the plan and sections in the same model view - it's like trying to physically turn the building sideways. Use the layout views to see the plan and sections side by side. This is the 2D representation of the virtual building in the model view.
You can of course have the section and plan windows open side by side (if your display is big enough) and work in both views.
(I see that you have been using AC for quite a while therefore I'm sorry if this is not what you meant!)
