Spell checker in Mac OS

I finally attempted to use the Spell Checker and had no luck with it :cry:The manual states that I must choose the MS spelling checker or Word Services before opening Spell Checker - AC will not let me choose the former, only the latter. When I open Spell Checker's dialogue box it immediately asks for a file or application - I found MS Word and 'chose' it. Even though I deliberately mis-spelled words, the Spell Checker said everything was OK. When I opened Spell Checker again, I had to repeat the entire process, but to no avail.

I assume, since I checked the archives and found nothing, that I must be doing something wrong - how do I get Spell Checker working?

To heck with the MS stuff, I want the OS X system spell checker to work. With the way OLE only works within Office in OS X I don't want to rely on their services for anything.
