What is the easiest way to select an empty opening?

I have an empty opening on a terrace wall and it's been a headache selecting it and coping it to the next floor. Now I have empty openings somewhere in the nowhere space above the wall and I find it hard to select them and delete them. If I delete the wall, they still remain.
