creating Library objects w/ marquee

Used to be able to take an existing object, cut it with a marquee, display in the 3D window, then save it as an object.
It appears now one has to select the object before saving as an object. This has the effect of saving the whole object before it was cut by the marquee, even though the part within the marquee is the only thing visible in the 3D window.

How can I do it the old fashioned way, and if not, how do I do it the new way.

Haven't verified the marquee issue, but SEO works - it will save a selected element as an object and preserve the trim.
