drawing elevations with slabs

As a fairly new user to Archicad, I have been drawing models as complete drawings, i.e. plans with all heights, floors internal doors etc.,
However I have seen examples of elevations drawn individually with slabs
and then put together as a model.
While in theory this sounds easy Im having problems with the practicality of this.
Could someone show me a step by step example of putting a window with some detail into a slab (wall) using this method

the only way you can mimic a window in a slab which represents a building is to carve a niche into it with SEO and pass the material to the cut face
