I find everyone i work with uses the chained geometry method, but no one bothers to keep the grouping clean & sensible. eventually the result is random lines grouped together.

It's possible to turn off the auto grouping all together but not just for chained lines as far as I know.
To turn off the autogroup - Edit - Grouping - Autogroup.
To turn off the autogroup - Edit - Grouping - Autogroup.

I keep auto-group off by default. It's generally more a hindrance than a help.

The Polyline tool will give you a chained line that is not grouped.
That doesn't help you with walls or beams though as there is no true polyline version of these.
It is either autogrouping on or off.
