mitre beams (profiles) in elevation

See the attached pic. Is the only way to trim these beams to a nice mitred intersection to use a roof and seo to the intersection? I thought maybe the trim or intersection tools might work. I tried SEO to each other, but that did not work.
The trim configurations are actually a complex profile.

SEO is the right way to go, but try using the roof overhang above them as the operator and subtract with upwards extrusion.

If this isn't a one-off problem, you might want to look at OBJECTiVE. You can cut up profiles with the a split tool (as you were hoping to do) without messing around with SEOs and cutting planes: http://www.encina.co.uk/objective.html
