ArchiCAD & Generative Components (Grasshopper+Geometry Gym)

What does ArchiCAD have to do with GC's?

According to Geometry-Gym, quite a bit!

Geometry Gym develop an IFC plugin for Grasshopper,
while Grasshopper have developed the most mind boggling
generative components synthesizer for Rhino(cerous).

Being a BIM architect in this day and age and NOT knowing
of these tools means you have gone missing.
Wake Up!

My final comment is: Who will develop such tools for GDL?

Promising stuff.

Automatic Beam Intersections can be toggled by the View\On-Screen View Options\Clean Wall & Beam Intersections menu command.

Hi Laszlo,
Finally got the moderator in on this!!
Beam & Wall intersections can only be toggled on/off
in PLAN view. I was talking about specifically switching
OFF the intersections per (selected) element, & in 3D.
Add to AC 16 wishlist?

I am working now with Jon from Geometry Gym to streamline the Grasshopper/Geometry Gym - ArchiCAD IFC workflow.
Jon has approached Graphisoft in the past, but did not receive
much assistance. Maybe you can through a good mention to the powers
that be to help him out some more?

The Implications for this are enormous, and I hope one day
a real-time / direct link can be established between the two systems,
not to mention the wish for having such a system under ArchiCAD's
own hood!

Cheers -

Hi Gil,
I am going to mention this to various people at GS but this about as much as I can do.

About the 3D Intersection: there is no such switch in 3D. The closest thing is the Layer Intersection Priority Numbers. Two Beams will Intersect in 3D if they are on the same layer, or they are on different layers but have different Layer Intersection Priority Numbers. It may be possible to play with Layers during the IFC import, but that means you may end up having 5-6 different Layers to import all those Beams.

Not if your layer intersection priority number is "0" (zero).
Then it won't intersect with anything.

Hi Barry,
Talk about teaching an old dog old tricks -
I forgot about that one, and think that an ON/OFF
switch should be implemented at the object level itself,
especially if we are going to be getting lots of these
wild geometries in the future.
NOTE: To get the clean-up by layer, I actually had to
create a new layer set to 0, and send the elements to
that layer, before any changes show up.
Thanks -

Actually, I did not know that.

Grasshopper & GDL

Hi All,
After further investigating, it does seem likely that a bridge of
sorts CAN be built between Grasshopper & GDL.
The main issue would be the creation of useful objects,
where GH is actually used to generate the LOGIC within the object,
leaving ArchiCAD to do the actual creation step and object manipulation.
This would be a long way from "Slabifiyng" or writing the usual odd
bit of GDL script and is a research unto its own!

PS:
That would call for a proper (External) GDL editor!
Due to my regional Unicode, I have to script with
everything aligned to the Right!

Grasshopper Workflow Update:

For those trying out The Grasshopper Geometry Gym
IFC plugin:

Please make sure you are up do date on the latest HOTFIX
(ArchiCAD 15 Hotfix-2 Build 3602)!

Upgrading has improved certain Geometry-Gym IFC issues
we encountered while testing, such as Elements ending up
on the wrong side of reference planes or certain auto-conversions
to GDL objects getting degenerated and not showing up.

Hi Gil,
Would be nice if you could show some examples of geometry created in Grasshopper and imported into ArchiCAD through IFC.
I for one am certainly interested in seeing them.
