And or saving a previous template made in V11 to V12 with the V12 library etc?
And I guess the same with layers, line types, fills etc.?
Thanks,
Jim

TomWaltz wrote:I guess I am using the term 'template' much more loosely, to describe in its entirety what people encounter when they migrate versions (like a burrito). I apologize for not making that more clear. Please reread my comments with that in mind.
If you think we're talking about templates in these statements, then you need to learn the difference between templates and work environments.
to recap then:
for me 'template' = Template File (views, stories, layouts, etc.) + WE (shortcuts, menus, etc.) + Attributes (lines, fills, materials, layers, layer combos, pens, etc.) + Favorites (predefined objects) + Libraries, Etc... basically everything I would put on my users 'desktops' so that when they show up to work with AC12 it seems familiar.

No ability to move a single post.)

Matt, it is essential on an educational forum like this to use standard terminology so that we are all talking about the same thing - particularly for the many participants who do not speak English as their native language.
A template file is defined as either a TPL or PLN file from which new projects are begun. A template does NOT include Libraries or Work Environments. It does include attributes, since they are stored within the file and not externally, and ideally contains company specific schedules, pre-placed elevation (etc) markers, pre-defined views, pre-defined rendering settings, layout cartoons and pre-placed drawings, etc. It most likely requires parts in a Company Library, but that library is not part of the template.
Graphisoft does not have a term for what you have described (template + libraries + WE) that I know of. There probably is a term for this in a generic CAD manager kind of lingo, but I don't know what it would be. Matthew Lohden, the master of terminology, probably knows.
PLEASE guys...before you hit 'reply', please instead just quote into a new thread - in either this forum, or some other appropriate forum (CAD Managers perhaps).
Thanks,
Karl

I'd like discussion to stay here also.
I'm learning a lot from it.
Might be harder to see big picture if it gets
broken apart.

2. Nor do I. In OUR office when we talk about version migration, we talk about the office template in the 'burrito' sense of the term. Your definition of a Template (uppercase T) is great and I agree totally with it, but you need to add the uppercase T to it. To me template≠Template.
template: something that establishes or serves as a pattern (merriam-webster)

Karl wrote:Thanks Karl, but I would say more the avid student of terminology (with the occasional attempt at invention)
Matthew Lohden, the master of terminology, probably knows.
I would call it "Office Standards" to be fully inclusive, or "VB/BIM Standards" to be specific to the software application stuff, or "ArchiCAD Standards" to exclude the AutoCAD and otherCAD stuff. (Office Standards can include things like "How to send an overnight package" or "Which coffee cups to serve to guests")
ArchiCAD standards can be implemented in ways that don't even use "Templates" (ie .tpl files) by using .aat and .mod files.

I honestly used to respect them. Unfortunately, they have shown their true colors as smug, close minded, egotistical know-it-alls with abject contempt for others opinions and experiences.
They have yet to explain the valid migration issues that I pointed out. Why are so many people having problems migrating from 11 to 12 if it is as easy as just cracking open AC12? PLEASE ANSWER THIS! Describe what your recommendations are for version migration. I would really love to hear it, perhaps I might regain some of my respect for you self righteous 'hard-core beta-testers'.
I wonder if you would behave this way if you were sitting in the same room as them? Somehow I doubt it. What company do you work for anyway? With so many people it must be well known, surely?
Oh and I wouldn't expect any answers from these guys anymore. They probably don't have the time or desire to deal with you.
Hunter.

p.s. - Hunter, please detail for me which of my comments you found to be smug, self-righteous and rude.
p.s.s. - For the record, I wasn't the one looking for an answer, poor Jim was (sorry dude, didn't think my simple advice would turn into such a controversy). And finally, who I work for has nothing to do with this conversation.
