Help! Shorcut menu has defaulted

Hi,

Am a newbie to Archicad (3 wks) and something has happened which has foxed the office.
I'm using Archicad 8.1 on Mac. so the problem is that the shortcut menu has change to a default setting & has no option to load anyother menu. have look at another computer in the office & it list 5 or 6 different shortcut menus which mine no longer has.
Is it a case of finding the files from another machine & placing it into the correct file? If so what is the name & location of the file.
Or do i need to re install Archicad?

Pls help as I've got a project to be out for friday & this problem is serverly slowing me down.

I assume you are talking about your custom menu shortcuts. These are stored in a preferences file in:

User Home > Library > Preferences > Graphisoft > AC8.1.0 V2 (or whichever version you are using).

They may have been over-written if you installed an update.

I believe that the shortcuts are stored in the "ArchiCAD Lasting.Prefs" file. If you have office standard shortcuts you can copy this file from someone else's machine otherwise you may need to find it on a backup. (You are backing-up your user folder aren't you?)

No not my custom menu (as far as I know) but the standard shortcut menus in Archicad.
If i go into: Options>Customize>Keyboard shortcuts...... at the Scheme tab I only have Archicad Default rather than a list of different shortcut menus , one of which I've only just started to learn from.
User Home > Library > Preferences > Graphisoft > AC8.1.0 V2 (or whichever version you are using).
No "user home file" or "Preferences" in the library file.

No update has been done to this Mac since Friday.

have look for file but can't find it.

falls of seat laughing. Err this company doesn't seem to understand the principle of standards and backups, I've only been here 3 wks and seem to hit a brickwall every time i ask for company standards.
Once i've learn't Archicad properly and they are paying me the right wage then I'll sort all that out.

All sorted by simply re installing.

Cheers for your help.

it sounded as though some of the default installed stuff in the application folder (./Applications/ArchiCAD Folder x) got deleted or misplaced . that's why your re-install sorted things out.

you will find this sort of behaviour if you upgrade your archiCAD software, which was what matthew was referring to (rather than the OS software).

if you're not seeing these files, it sounds as though something is wrong with your user account on the machine and could also possibly explain why archiCAD was having reading it's defaults out of the application folder . . how are you logged in? admin user? server user? check the permissions, etc.

Hiya Ben

Wish I'd read this post 15 minutes ago!

Just updated to R2/V2 and now all my personalised shortcut keys have been ovewritten. D'oh! D'oh! D'oh!

Why oh why doesn't the update installer put up a banner recommending that you copy your prefs folder before updating? (rhetorical question).

Oh well, now Ctrl+I for Intersection...

hey kev. how's things? (apart from upgrade problems )

yes - some clarification on what happens to your shortcuts would be handy. i think that they are saved by archiCAD build at the moment though: you should be able to drag them out of the 'graphisoft' folder in your user preferences folder for v1/r1 (i don't know where this is kept on a PC, anybody help?) and into the newly created v2/r2 preferences folder. i'm not sure which one contains your key shortcuts though: DialPos/Basic/Lasting ?

it would be nice if these were saved somewhere safe and reusable, eh?

Matthew, great help, but for Win XP users:

I found my previous ArchiCAD Lasting.prefs file in C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Application Data\Graphisoft\ArchiCAD[version]

The updater doesn't overwrite the prefs, but instead creates a new folder with the latest version name and puts a 'clean' prefs file in this. Simply copy from the previous folder into the new one and voila!
(Obviously I can't take the credit for that one, simply standing on the shoulders of giants - or something like that...)

Now I have all my quirky settings again!

Didn't find the answer?
