Quick Layers is a very important tool in setting up Layer Combinations.
Starting from the Menu bar click on Windows - Palettes - Quick Layers.

Using the Quick Layers palette turn of every layer you don't want to see the Layer Combination your making. Then select all of the objects and using the Quick Layers palette again click Hide Others' Layer to turn off all other layers to make sure any layers not showing at the time are not unintentionally included. Now use Ctrl-L to open the Layer Settings (Model views) window. Click New, and name your new layer combination. Click OK. Now when you open the View, it will use the Layer Combination you just created. Right click on your View, select View Settings to see what Layer Combination is associated with the view.
