Layers in archicad

Hello,

I´m struggling to create independent layers for my floor plan - for example one that I can turn on/off for garden elements (objects, lines, fills etc in the same layer). 

I can't seem to find any information on how to do this. Also, how can I choose which layer to connect an element to? 

Operating system used: Mac Intel-based
