How do you select multiple layers eg to change a heap of layers into one

Use the Find and Select tool. Or the Quick Layers tool, then Ctrl-Shift-T
( Edit Selection Set )

Do you know how to use these yet ?

it sounds like you want to amalgamate layer content from the layers dialogue? i admit that it would be a very useful feature, but unfortunately not possible.

right, what? Moving "heaps of layers" all into one layer is a very common task. I do it everytime I get a drawing file from the surveyor.
