I'm looking for somebody working with Windows Vista ...

....on a new Mac

it is an experience straight out of the Mac commercial, you constantly compare it to the "starting up a mac" experience

as I saw more examples running windowsXP on the macbook pro WHEN necessary it feels like my next windows workhorse will be a mac.

I saw Archicad demoed on it, and lately on the Maker's Faire lot of developers did their windows development, Visual Studio on MacBook Pros- SWEET!

as for Vista/XP goes, it's deja vu all over again: 3.11/95, 98/95, NT/98, 2000/NT, XP/2000.... with ever more restrictive licensing agreements...

"stick to XP(2000,NT)" sounds good, but at one point the changing reality makes it a luddite argument.

sure, the earlier you adapt, the more thorns you will meet, but the later you adapt, the harder it will be.

kind'a analog to when you liked a couple things better in the earlier version of ArchiCAD, but you would be looking strangely today on the person who sticks with ArchiCAD 7 on Mac OS9

Vista by the way is looking appealing, nicer, more up to date, eventually better user experience (once you explore it), but takes some patience and learning - which I hate to dedicate to Redmond idiosyncrasies

so: if you are working on XP, don't jump.
if the vendor asks what version you prefer on your new PC: XP
if the purchase you are comfortable with comes with Vista: don't freak out, take some time adjusting to it and figuring it out.

wrinkles will be ironed out eventually.

I generally wait about 6 months to 1 year to upgrade to a new version of Windows (though I think I got NT4.0 soon after it was released) - at least until service pack one is released. It definitely saves a lot of trouble.

On the Mac side I usually wait a few days to see if there are any significant issues before I update/upgrade.

That's good practice.

Over time XP will feel awkward compared to Vista- once you figured it out.
But there are circumstances (new machine, working in mixed environment), which could color the picture somewhat.

To buy a new copy of XP and install it over Vista sound extreme, and new, powerful hardware tend to be released with the "system of the day" drivers

I know, but at the end of the day it's whatever gets the job done that matters. As I understand it, HP and Dell are still offering XP as an option on new machines.

If I understand corectly - if you have Vista you are allowed to install XP (home to home, pro to business etc.) for free. You just need CDs.

that might be a good "plan B) strategy. Does one enter the Vista key at XP installation? Anybody did this-and care to share?

I didn't have the time yet to deeper research (I think there is not too much of a budget either)

My plan b is take this opportunity to persuade the client to update to R10, - no pmk update. We'll see.

Running AC9 on Vista? You can't really blame Graphisoft for problems with this combination.

did I mention blame? I didn't think so. The client hasn't updated yet, and all his projects are currently on 9.

BTW. it wouldn't be such a bad idea from goodwill perspective that if there is a fix GS would release it. The Vista issues posted by GS are for versions 9 and 10, so this is not far fetched in the real world. I bet I'm not alone.

I'm not here to defend Graphisoft, but if the client insists on running an older release, I would advise to run it in an environment for which is was properly tested...
I have used Virtual PC in cases where I needed a really old application to run in its old OS on a current PC. That might work just fine. I'm not sure about dongle-compatibility, though.

Fixing patches, compiled and supported, are hard to justify when current development has just finished release 11. It would probably help a lot to disable any fancyness in Vista (Aero) and run in XP or 2000-mode.

The whole CAD world seems to agree to not advice the use of Vista for CAD and 3D applications. There has to be a reason for that 😉

(FWIW, I have installed Vista, but do my main work in XP and OSX).
