separate floor plan / elevation reference grids?

I use a floor plan grid a lot while drafting.

is it possible to set up a different elevation grid?

they are not the same dimensions.
i am about to set up a layer or something and manually draw a grid but did not know if there was a better way.

If you are referring to the Background Grid (Grids & Background), they have their own settings for each window, so you can set one grid for the plan and a different grid for the elevation.
