too many layers!

it seems that i am always wrestling with layers / setting / etc.

i am wondering if there is a better strategy for this.

i find that i am always creating another layer for something...1st floor notes, 2nd floor notes,

also when i switch back and forth between drawings, the layer combinations switch, but not back. so, if i look at an elevation then back to a FP, the layer combo stays at elevation combo set. is this a bug or somehting i am doing wrong.

Sounds like you do not understand the difference between Views and Viewpoints, as far as layer combos not changing when you switch between elevation and plan...

And creating separate anno layers per story sounds like you came to ArchiCAD from a 2D CAD background? Stories segregate information already, so there is no reason for per-story anno layers.

These are very basic issues that should be understood before beginning one's first 'real' project... have you had any hands-on training in ArchiCAD?

This depends on how you are navigating/working you project. If you are opening "saved views" from the navigator, then it will load it with all its properties.

If you open an elevation from saved views that has a layer combo, that combo will stay until you open another view with another layer combo, like if you open a floor plan from view map.

If you open that same elevation with its layer combo from view map, and then switch to floor plan (without opening the view, by using another command such as F2 in windows), the layer combo will be the same.

Many people work from view map, opening views from there. I personally do the majority of my work in project map. If I need a specific view with its properties set, I open it in view map and then continue work in project map, since layer combo and all other view properties will be consistent. But there have been some projects where it was easier to open views or work from view map.

Managing ayers and layer combos can get quite complex but it can also be kept fairly simple depending on the needs of the project.

You don't need to create separate layers for annotations by floor. This is taken care of by using storeys. In fact (almost) the only reason to have multiple annotation layers is when you have overlapping drawings in a single plan view (ie floor plan, enlarged floor plan, ceiling plan, etc.) and, depending on your workflow, some of these can be moved to worksheets.

As for layer combos there are two working ones active at any time. One for the model views and another for the layouts. Referenced views and placed drawings often have different ones for display purposes but when you switch to a view to work in that layer combo will become the current working combo. A good practice is to set up views for both drawing/detailing and for editing the model with the appropriate layer combos set so you can quickly switch to whatever you need.

yes i am new to AC, coming from CAD and revit.

I think that some of the issues are a combo of me not know the software, also i am coming into the middle of a project where the file is set up half 2d, half 3d. which does not take advantage of the BIM concept.
