VPN Teamwork acts like local machine is out of RAM, but no!

I ran a test with one copy of a project on my local BIM server and the same project on the BIM server of our our second office 500 miles away. We have a VPN setup between the offices.

As i expected, a send/receive is just a few seconds on the local BIM server and 1+ minutes for the distant BIM server over the VPN. It is great to work real time with the same model between offices, and i do not mind the slower send/receive.

Unfortunately, I am seeing some other strange behavior that is driving me crazy!!!

1. When Switching between applications (ArchiCAD, Outlook for email, Chrome for internet) ArchiCAD can take 20 to 30 seconds to become acrive again. during this time, ArchiCAD will not do a screen refresh, so if you drag an Outlook window across ArchiCAD it leaves a smear. This goes away after 20 to 30 seconds. So i was concerned the local machine was out of RAM. Bit this does not happen with the local BIM server project. Also I have attached my CPU performance.

2. When I have two ArchiCAD sessions open at the same time with different projects over the VPN, the refresh time takes 3+ minutes. However, when i have two ArchiCAD sessions open with different projects on the local BIM server there is no issue with screen refresh or delays.

3. If i get a phone call and let ArchiCAD idle for a few minutes, coming back to it will result in the same 20 to 30 second delays. Again, it seems like the local machine is out of resources, but again, this never happens when i am working on the Local BIM Server.

4. When delays occur, there is no visual clue when it is back up and running. For instance, if i use the arrow to make a selection box and nothing happens, i might click a few time and still nothing happens, but i do not know when it is ready until i click because sometimes that first action of making a selection box never happens.

5. When autosave comes on, there is a delay, but i think this is the same as my local setup.

6. Sometimes when i am working, it randomly delays for 20-30 seconds. Sometimes it is faster, sometimes the delays are longer. Yesterday i had a delay of more than 5 minutes. When I look in Windows task manager it says ArchiCAD is NOT Responding, but after the delay, it always comes back.

Is ArchiCAD sending info through the VPN during these moments?

Is there anything I can do to streamline my setup?

I see this on my pc and wonder if it isn't the heinous Norton which has become increasingly intrusive.

Good question.

I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection as a managed client on a network environment...

I forgot how notorious virus protection is at eating up resources. I'll run some tests.
