Construction Simulation

I came across a movie http://www.stratacafe.com/image.asp?imageID=16620&artistimages=1&killnext=0 created by a chap in London trying to show a construction simulation similar to what ArchiCAD's Construction Simulation can do.

I have contacted him and he is interested in seeing what Archicad can do. I've had a look around the Graphisoft website but I didn't have any luck finding any movies or descriptions of the Construction Simulation process.

Can anyone point me in the right direction so who knows we may be able to convert him from the Dark Side

I have several "Construction Simulation" movies. I'll post one on my web site later today but would be glad to email a copy to you. (it's 4.2 MB zipped)

ArchiCAD can't do anything. We can 😉

Basic principle:

You need the model, preferably with terrain, excavation, foundations, etc, and MS Project building schedule.

Then you link the parts of the model (by layers, types, whatever) to the MS Project database.

Then, it generates the movie.

Works pretty nicely; now Graphisoft also has Constructor, that is much more professional and to the point. Try looking for it.

What John Jones has done is simply generate a 40 or so frame movie showing the upward movement of a boolean. That can be done in ArchiCAD also within ten minutes.

I like the movement of the entire building rising from a negative elevation to its place. Looks like you have grown a building. Or perhaps scale it from breifcase size to full size, just add a drop of water. Pure Hollywood techniques.

The construction simulation is entirely different, it is linked to a real construction schedule. It would show the pad, then the steel frame rising, the roof complete, then the exterior walls and finally the interior finish which , if it is realistic, would go on forever and eventually go over budget. HA

The construction simulation is what he is interested in as it shows a more realistic animation rather than a simplistic boolean animation as you say.

Trouble is I've not found on Graphisoft's website a nice QT movie showing an example of what it would look like

Thanks Woodster for emailing one rather sophisticated example.

I thought I would give it a go with an old project so below is a link to a simple one I put together (840k QT movie). I think I messed up the first floor links as the green highlight colour doesn't appear on them.

Woodster, I would love to see those simulations. Can you send them to me at

Hi Woodster

Looks like you didn't see the link to the movie I had included in my previous post. Here it is again
