Down and dirty rendering

I thought I would share a methodology I just used to create some color elevations for a coastal review board. This may not be stelar but it was fast. The concept was to set a color rendered image of the model behind a line drawing elevation. This was fast and easy to do. Look at the model in the 3d window in elevation view, save as an image file, bring the image file into archicad, and size to match the elevation drawing. I then brought the elevation drawing and rendered image into plotmaker as two different view sets and aligned them with hot spots (this allowed the black and white line drawing on top of the color rendered elevation). The other methodology I used was to set the fill of the landscape to an 85% fill, choosing white as the fill color. This tended to ghost the trees in front of both the line drawing and rendered elevation. You will have to zoom in (or print out) the attached PDF to see the effect. I know this is primitive to what a lot of you are doing, but I thought it was worth sharing.

Might be quick, but it isn't dirty. Nice to see posts that relate to vector presentations (applied to architectural requirements). Also interesting to see how you handled local jurisdictions with class. Bravo!

If I ever run into a coastal project requiring review it would be nice to call upon your local experience.

Nice presentation. Simple and effective. Fancy computer graphics as often get in the way of presentations as support them. I particularly like the screened trees with the white pen.

Regarding the building (if I may be so bold), I like the colors (so many Architects seem to be afraid of color), but I would like it better with a parapet and a flat roof.

Given the current Pineapple Express roaring through So Cal, that standing seam roof looks just fine. However, whats about the cantilever over the entrance.

This reminds me of a template I created for a client a long time ago.

As part of a master template system, the same result can be achieved straight out of elevation windows. The colored elements must have an applied material that references a solid vectorial hatch. Then, depending on the type of element it is, you can basically set the elevation pen to whichever color you wish.

This is imported into PlotMaker and grouped to an overlaid line elevation that has no hatching and all pens mapped to one or a few colors (usually black or shades of grey), with appropriately layered display orders.

This method eliminates the need to go to the 3D window and resize any images. It can also be pre-linked, so no ongoing maintenance is needed. In essence it is automatic, but I would only recommend trying it if you produce these colored elevations all the time.

I must mention that pushing the limits like this does highlight the weaknesses of the program!
